This is Not Silver Paint!

I love Pinterest. I'm an addict, a worshiper, a devoted follower. My favorite evening relaxation is plopping down in the corner of my overstuffed couch and spending an hour or two scrolling through Pinterest and repinning everything that catches my fancy. A friend of mine says Pinterest is electronic hoarding; I prefer to think of it as being allowed to flip through every magazine I like and tear out my favorite photos without paying a dime. There are wonderful ideas on Pinterest, but also some dumb ones. And a lot of mislabeling that drives me bonkers. Take a look at the photo below, currently making the Pinterest rounds:

Metallic painted wooden furniture

This bureau is not painted, metallic or otherwise.  Well, maybe underneath the silver leaf it is, but that's beside the point. And if you doubt me, take a closer look: see the air bubbles underneath the leaf? Nor is it a do-it-yourself piece, as the tag line circulating Pinterest implies: this dresser was for sale at Wisteria.

I have no doubt this look can be duplicated: metallic leaf is for sale in craft stores and on-line, and I've even wondered if aluminum foil or metallic wallpaper or shelf-liner would work, but you aren't going to get this look with a can or two of metallic spray paint.

But you can get this look by Kathy Owen over at TipJunkie:

Not as shiny as the silver-leaf bureau, the paint has an older, aged appeal.

And there's this bit of wonderful over at RedHen.
Done with wallpaper paste and aluminum foil.
